Answer Letter 0.1.0 for iPhone and iPad.
Getting a reply
Tap the paper and start writing. Send with the return key — the keyboard shows it as Send. Return is the only way to send, so putting the keyboard away will not post anything half-finished. The reply is written onto the same slip, below what you wrote.
I cannot add to a letter
That is intended. A letter holds one exchange: you write once, the model answers once, and the letter is sealed. If you want to say something else, begin a new one.
The reason is that somewhere you can keep replying gets used like a chat window — half a thought sent, then corrected, then corrected again. The cost is real: a new letter knows nothing about the one before it, so anything that matters has to be written out again.
Beginning a new letter, and going back
When a reply is finished, the corner of a fresh sheet appears at the right edge. Drag it left and it becomes the letter you are writing on. The one you were on slides underneath.
To read something you wrote earlier, push the current letter back to the right. The pile underneath comes up one at a time. Every letter you have written is also listed behind the two lines in the top left, where you can delete them individually or clear the lot.
The first launch takes a few seconds
Half a gigabyte of model weights has to be mapped into memory before anything can run. The progress bar is paced on a timer rather than on the engine's own figures, which arrive unevenly and then stop entirely for the last stretch. Later launches are faster because the file is already warm.
Replies are slow
Speed depends almost entirely on the chip. On recent iPhones the model writes at reading speed; on older devices it is noticeably slower, and there is no server to offload to. A shorter letter also starts answering sooner — the whole of what you wrote is read before the first word comes back.
The reply stops mid-sentence
A letter is one slip of paper. Replies are capped so they fit on it rather than running off the edge, and the model is asked to keep them to a few sentences. Ask for less at a time and you will get a complete answer instead of a truncated one.
The answer is wrong
It is a 0.8-billion-parameter model — small enough to fit on a phone, and correspondingly limited. It will get facts wrong, especially about recent events, and it has no way to look anything up. Treat replies as a starting point, not a source.
Where my letters are
On the device, inside the app's private storage. They are not synced anywhere and not included in any account. Deleting the app deletes them permanently. See the privacy policy.
